We worked with several methods to try to get the surface smooth. The outside was not much of a problem. We patched a few places with colored putty, and used a horseshoe rasp to remove much of the glue. A large horse hoof file was then used to smooth the surface prior to sanding with 120 grit sand paper. The inside was scraped with a cabinet scraper, then we used a 2x4 block shaped with the curve of the canoe and coated with 36 grit automotive sandpaper. This really took off the material prior to final 120 grit sanding.
