The gunwales were made from ash. The scuppers are being cut here using a 3/4 dado bit. We placed a mark on the fence where it came in and again where it was to stop, allowing for each of them to be exactly the same. The material for the gunwales may be joined into longer pieces by making a very long bevel on each piece and then glueing them. If the joint does not have enough surface contact, the joint will fail under the pressure of the curve when placed on the hull. We made two for Norman's canoe with perfect alignment and coloration. They still hold even with the wear and tear of several major canoe trips.
